Coco Cola, the American beverage juggernaut, dropped a bombshell early of this week when it announced that it would offer nearly $2.5 billion to acquire China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd, which is a market bellwether in the juice market.

As usual, this announcement has sparked a backlash against foreign brands mustard on buying out established mainland brands, particularly among a bevy of mainlanders who express disappoint and even resentment toward foreign name-plate brands like Coco Cola.

"These formidable foreign powers are set to hog the Chinese market by plundering our time-honored brand values in the form of mergers and and acquisitions, and it goes without saying that the market share of such foreign companies will grow at a fast clip if we don't impose restrictions on it", someone writes in a post shown on one Chinese discussion board, which is mainly designed to elicit more high-pitched talk on topics ranging from sports to social events.

Likewise, In a local radio program early of this week, floods of listeners, rankled by the news saying Coco Cola wants to seize control of Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd, stampeded the discussion anchored by two local talk show hosts, raising concerns about the legitimacy of this proposed buy-out.

"It's own brand. How can we hand it over to foreigners? More to the point, whereas other domestic brands often face image problems arising from producing defected and even bootleg products, this brand has good credentials and hard-own cache among Chinese people. Therefore, we should safeguard it," writes a fervent listener attending the discussion.

Sounds plausible, huh? Yes and no. at first glance, it's really understandable for us to have such bona fide small-bore views every time when the so-called "national interests " are at stake, or more precisely speaking, when the so-called Chinese mindset is at odds with ideology championed by foreigners; such disenchantment against foreign culture paraded by tucks of Chinese will be lauded publicly, in that it shows our national pride or a validation of our fast-growing financial and political muscles in this tumultuous world, with America preoccupied with tinkering with their bungling financial markets and Russia still grappling with hot button issues like the resurgent conflict unfolding in Georgia.

How can a Chinese company behave such sheepish , the thinking goes, at time when China is admired by other nations for having hosted such ripsnorting big-ticket Olympic Games?

On the other hand, such daft narrow- mindness will take a toll on our stock investors in the long run, since those poorly run, rulebound Chinese companies will still be forced to put itself on the block once it hits snags, or when the foreign and domestic companies compete on the same footing. In truth, the timing of Coco Cola's offer comes at a perfect time, when most stock shares of Chinese compaies have been dipping, slammed by rampant speculation and irregularies inherent in this morbid, topsy-turvy stock market. And that will signal trouble for such Chinese financially besieged companies, say, when they step up to the plate because foreign predators will have a pole position at the bargaining table. In other words, the stockholders of such Chinese companies will extact negligible gains from selling their companies to foreigners.

That's why I think it will be more than a shot in the arm for Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd once it becomes part of Coco Cola. In effect, major stock holders of Huiyuan will hit the jackpot too, since I have doubts that this Chinese company can rake up buckets of profits, or fetch a fistful of returns for its stockholders in the long term.

How so? Because only easy meats will think that beverage business is a persistent growth business or a cash cow even for big giants like Coco Cola and Pepsi. Just ask the former CEOs of Coco Cola if you are not sold.
